| Cast They Burden Upon the Lord| Psalm 55:22 |
📖 Scripture:
“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” — Psalm 55:22 (KJV)
Devotional:
Some burdens are easy to recognize.
They arrive with bad news, financial trouble, a broken relationship, an unexpected loss, or a problem that demands an immediate answer.
Others are quieter.
They are the worries we carry from one day into the next. The situation we keep replaying in our minds. The responsibility that has become heavier than we expected. The question we cannot answer and the outcome we cannot control.
David understood what it meant to carry a heavy heart.
Psalm 55 was written during a time of deep distress. David spoke of fear, anguish, and betrayal. He even wished that he could fly away and find rest somewhere far from everything troubling him.
But by the end of the psalm, David turns his attention away from escape and toward God.
“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee.”
Notice that Scripture does not tell us to pretend the burden is light.
It tells us where to put it.
To cast something means we must release it from our own hands. Yet sometimes we pray about a burden and immediately pick it back up. We give God the situation, then spend the rest of the day worrying about how He will handle it.
We surrender the person, then continue rehearsing every possible outcome.
We ask God to make a way, then exhaust ourselves trying to figure out the way before He does.
But God does not ask you to know how everything will work out before you trust Him.
He asks you to give Him what is weighing you down.
And His promise is not simply that He will deal with the burden. Scripture says:
“He shall sustain thee.”
While God works in the situation, He strengthens the person carrying it.
He gives grace for the day you are in. Strength for the responsibility before you. Peace when circumstances remain unsettled. And enough help to take the next step even when you cannot see what comes after it.
The burden may not disappear the moment you pray.
But you do not have to carry it alone.
Reflection:
What have you been carrying that has become too heavy?
Perhaps you have prayed about it before, but somewhere along the way, you picked it back up.
Scripture says:
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”— 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)
God is not inconvenienced by the things that concern you.
You can bring Him the same burden again. You can tell Him where you are tired, frightened, disappointed, or uncertain.
And then you can place it back into His hands.
Daily Wisdom Insight:
Surrender does not mean the burden never crosses your mind again.
It means that when it does, you remember who is carrying it with you.
God may change the situation, change the path ahead, or give you strength while you walk through it.
You do not have to carry tomorrow's weight with today's strength.
Application:
Today, identify one burden you have been carrying.
Write it down if that helps you name it honestly.
Then pray:
“Lord, I give this burden to You. Sustain me while I trust You with what I cannot control.”
When the worry returns, resist the urge to begin solving everything in your mind again.
Return to Psalm 55:22.
Cast it upon the Lord again—and keep walking.
Prayer:
Father,
You know the burdens I carry,
even the ones I rarely speak about.
You know what has made me weary,
what has kept my mind restless,
and what I have tried to handle on my own.
Today, I place these burdens into Your hands.
Help me release what I cannot control
and trust You with what I cannot see.
When worry returns,
remind me that I do not have to carry it alone.
Sustain me when I am tired.
Strengthen me when I feel overwhelmed.
Give me peace while I wait,
wisdom for the steps I need to take,
and faith for everything I must leave with You.
Teach me to cast my burden upon You
and trust that You will sustain me.
Amen.
